Israel/Palestine:
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Assessment

Violence against women in Israel and the West Bank and Gaza Strip continues to increase daily due to the continued violence in the region. Circle of Health International (COHI), which has previously worked with women in conflict and disaster-affected areas in Louisiana, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tanzania and Tibet, is currently working with Israeli and Palestinian women in Israel and the West Bank, spearheading two co-existence projects addressing midwifery and gender-based violence (GBV).

Stephanie Chaban will serve as the researcher for the GBV component of the project, and will be spending the summer of 2007 conducting a comprehensive GBV survey in Israel and the West Bank for COHI. This assessment will include in depth interviews and recommendations for each sector of Israel and the West Bank's diverse populations: religious and secular Jews, immigrant populations (Ethiopian, Russian, Congolese), the Bedouin, and the Palestinian populations of Israel and the West Bank, both Muslim and Christian. While research has previously been conducted on some of these populations, no such project has worked comparatively with each ethnic/religious group in the region.  Project outcomes are:

  1. To produce a substantial GBV ethnography of the region;
  2. To design and implement specialized programming targeting the cultural nuances of each group; and
  3. Coalition-building among Israeli and Palestinian organizations to implement relevant projects in partnership with local women's rights organizations.

COHI and its partners look forward to using the assessment's findings as a tool in advocating for better programming to address the needs of Israeli and Palestinian women, and conflict affected women worldwide. The assessment also seeks to empower women and their communities while addressing issues of violence and conflict.

In order to implement this project, your assistance is needed. Your contribution will go directly to the funding of this assessment and will allow COHI to contribute to the improvement of quality, access, and effectiveness of services for women who experience gender-based violence in this conflict-affected region. To get directly involved, contact COHI directly: stephanie@cohintl.org.
